Well, another lockdown has reared its ugly head BUT luckily for everyone in the Bicester area, owner of Box Bars, Heather is here to help us drown our sorrows!
Who is Box Bars?
Heather started up Box Bars a couple of years ago as a bespoke mobile bar company. She meticulously custom designed and built (with a lil’ help) her beautiful pop up bar and has since provided the alcoholic goods at a number of weddings, parties and fundraisers across Oxfordshire! However, after lockdown began in March, Heather realised that people were still pining after their favourite cocktails and bar experiences but were unable to go out and fulfil it! Enter Box Bars at Home…
Every month or two Heather launches a new cocktail box, which tends to fit in with the time of year. From her Summer ‘Glasthomebury’ box, which included the fun cocktails ‘Antarctic Monkeys’, ‘Post Melone’ and ‘Fizz Khalifa’ to her Halloween style Autumnal box that flaunts the festive tipples ‘Apple Pie on the Rocks’, ‘Pear and Elderflower Collins’ and ‘Spiked Pumpkin’, the boxes give you a warm fuzzy feeling before you’ve even started on the alcohol.
On Thursday, my sister and I delved into the Autumnal box to try and soothe the start of lockdown 2.0. Not surprisingly, it worked a treat!
The Box Bars at Home Experience
Earlier in the week, Heather dropped off our cocktail box, which included EVERYTHING we needed for our cocktail night. From the specific glassware, cocktail shaker and ice to each measured out ingredient, mixer and garnish, everything was perfectly organised so that we could get to the drinking part nice and quickly.
Heather’s niche is her attention to detail and you can see that in every box she creates. She thinks of every tiny item you could imagine to make her bar experience (whether at an event or at home) that extra bit special and memorable. You can see it in the dehydrated fruit garnishes, the trick or treat sweets, the themed menu sheets and the autumnal leaves – nothing goes unthought of at Box Bars.
Each menu gives you a summary of the cocktail itself as well as, a list of ingredients and a step by step guide to making the cocktail.
We started off with the Pear and Elderflower Collins – Tanqueray No. 10 gin, pear puree, elderflower cordial, lemon and soda water, finished off with a dehydrated lemon slice. This was the perfect light and fresh cocktail to start off the evening and went down a little too easily…
Next up was the Apple Pie on the Rocks – vanilla vodka, whisky, apple juice and cinnamon sugar. This cocktail packed a punch (my favourite kind of drink) and the coating of the glass rim with cinnamon sugar was a great way to elevate the Autumnal twist on the drink.
Finally, we saved the Spiked Pumpkin for our ‘after dinner’ drink – Baileys, spiced rum, pumpkin puree and spice mix. This was TASTY and probably my favourite out of the three! You can’t really go wrong with a potent mix of Baileys and spiced rum can you?!
Each cocktail in our box was delicious! I love how they all had their own unique flare with some combinations I’d never tried before – have you ever had pumpkin puree in a cocktail? We’ve been missing out! The process of making them was also fun but simple and easy to do. Don’t worry, even when you’re a tad tipsy you’ll still manage to make the perfect cocktail!
The Low Down
Ordering a cocktail box from Box Bars couldn’t be easier! Head over to the website shop, choose a delivery date, box size (2, 4 or 6 people), enter your delivery address and checkout. You can also add a cute message if you’re ordering the box for somebody else for an occasion. Heather will then deliver the box directly to your/your friend’s door on your chosen date! Each cocktail box includes three cocktails per person and costs £40 for 2 people, £70 for 4 and £90 for 6. There is also a £20 refundable deposit for all of the glassware, shaker etc, which you’ll receive back after collection.
In addition to the monthly themed boxes, Box Bars also has a fantastic selection of Shake ‘n’ Go cocktails, which do as they say on the tin – add ice, shake and drink! Flavours include Passionfruit Martini, Strawberry Daiquiri, Bramble, Aloe Lemonade and Espresso Martini and are perfect for a thoughtful gift for a friend or a girls night in (£6 each or £25 for 5, £45 for 10 or £60 for 15).
What’s Next for Box Bars?
The Autumnal box I sampled this week will continue to be available until mid to late November, so if you like what you’ve seen in this post, make sure you get your order in for the next couple of weekends! Heather will then be launching the Christmas box, which I have no doubt will be filled with exciting festivities – PERFECT for making those festive evenings that bit more exciting and special (especially if we’re still in lockdown).
Box Bars will also be going NATIONWIDE in the next couple of months with the launch of their very exciting postal boxes! This will mean you can order alcoholic gifts such as prosecco boxes and perfect paired gin and tonics to addresses outside of the Bicester/Banbury area! Keep an eye out on Box Bars’ Instagram, Facebook and website for details on the launch.
Box Bars at Home is the ideal night in gift to yourself or someone else – especially during the lockdown period! Heather brings the cocktail bar experience to your home and has thought of every tiny detail to make each cocktail easy to make, delicious and memorable. This is now my second Box Bars at Home box and most certainly won’t be the last – bring on the Christmas cocktail festivities!
If you’d like to bag yourself a cocktail box for the weekend, head over to the Box Bars website NOW to place your order. Don’t forget to also keep an eye out for the launch of their new postal boxes, which are coming very soon!
