A Guide to Lockdown Takeaways in Bicester

March 10, 2021

There is finally an end in sight to this lockdown however, we still have just under 5 weeks before pubs and restaurants can (hopefully) reopen outdoors, which means we have 5 more weeks to make the most of the amazing takeaways we have on our doorstep in Bicester and the surrounding areas.

In this post I’ve compiled all of my favourite independent takeaway businesses in the area (broken down by cuisine type) so that you have an easy one stop shop to help you choose, which takeaway to go for when you fancy a treat during lockdown and beyond.

Please note: I have only included takeaways I have personally tried and will be updating this post as and when I discover and sample more takeaways.

Y&R Sushi

I still think about this sushi platter on a weekly basis and will be putting in another order very soon! Y&R Sushi is run by a lovely couple, Yaiza and Rene who have been making Japanese cuisine for over 20 years. They make the dishes to order from their home, so have kept the menu quite small however, it includes everything you’d need for a sushi feast! From edamame beans, teriyaki chicken skewers and gyoza dumplings to sashimi, tempura prawns with coconut and sharing boxes of assorted sushi (for 2, 4, 5+ and 10+), there’s plenty of choice to satisfy a sushi craving.

Wing On

Wing On is a no frills firm favourite for Asian takeaways in Bicester – probably because they offer most cuisines you can think of! From Chinese and Japanese to Thai and English, they offer something for everyone, which makes it a really handy choice if your household are all craving something different.

I went for sushi – a large veggie roll, cucumber and avocado uramaki and yellow pickle and avocado uramaki (all 8 pieces each). They were all really tasty, well made and hit the spot albeit, they weren’t anything ‘special’. Whilst my sister and her boyfriend went for Chinese, which they both rated highly. Wing on is great if you want quick, well made and affordable food from across Asia and they also have a fab selection of veggie options.

Place your order for delivery or collection on their website here.

Choices Bicester

Choices Bicester is run by couple Rachel and Sumat who serve up a mixture of cuisines but primarily they draw on Sumat’s heritage, Danish and Thai, for their menus. Their most prominent offering at the moment is their Thai inspired three course menu, which they deliver on a Saturday however, they also do Danish meatball nights and have just launched a new picnic menu. Their Thai menu changes weekly and tends to include popular Thai staples such as, spring rolls, chicken satay and Thai curries. They offer three very affordable courses and each course has its vegetarian counterpart. Their food is delicious and tastes really authentic – it threw me straight back to the street stalls of Bangkok with every bite!

You can place your order up until 6pm on the Friday before via Facebook Messenger or on WhatsApp. Click here to read my full review.

Cabbages & Condoms

Cabbages & Condoms is a Thai restaurant just off of Market Square that serves up delicious, authentic Thai food with a side of condoms (find out more about their name and ethos here). This was the last restaurant I visited before the first lockdown and has been a firm favourite for takeaways since – the dishes taste just like they do in Thailand, they’re reasonably priced and profits from the restaurant help support an NGO in Thailand. I highly recommend the tofu panang curry and tom kha soup and you can never go wrong with a massaman or Pad Thai.

Have a read of their takeaway menu here. You can place your order via their website or over the phone Tuesday – Sunday, 11am – 9.30pm.

V-Giyan is run by Bal Gill and his family from their home in a village just outside of Bicester. The Gill family originate from Punjab and are passionate about combining the fresh flavours of Punjab and the ayurvedic purposes of the ingredients they use. Their menu is entirely vegan and offers everything from vegetable spring rolls and Punjabi bhajis to coconut and mushroom curry and spicy malai kofta.

If you would like to try V-Giyan’s Punjabi vegan takeaway, head over to their website to browse their menu and place your order. Click here to read my full review.

Nadia’s Indian

Nadia’s Indian is located just off of Buckingham Road and offer no frills, excellent takeaway Indian food. On their menu you will find everything from traditional Indian dishes and set menus to an array of Nadia’s more unique house specials.

To have a gander at the menu and to place your order, head over to Nadia’s website.

The Pizza Boys

The Pizza Boys offer excellent quality Neapolitan style pizzas with a delicious choice of seasonal toppings. You can currently find them at The Angel in Bicester on Wednesdays and Fridays for takeaways and they have also just announced the very exciting news that they’ll be opening a permanent residency, The Pizza Boys Bistro at Green Hill Farm Camping in Bletchingdon.

Pre-order your pizzas via their Instagram page or by calling up The Angel on 01869 360410. Read my full review here.

Boho Burrito

If you’re looking for a burrito the size of a newborn baby, you’ve come to the right place! Boho Burrito is located in Bicester Business Park and serves up all essential Mexican dishes from Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 8pm. On the menu you’ll find burritos stuffed with smoky shredded pork and all other burrito essentials, tacos filled to the brim with pulled jackfruit, sour cream and cheese, spicy jalapeno poppers served with a chilli jam, nachos piled high with toppings, crispy churros and even Mexican sodas.

You can see their menu and place your order by following this link or via their Facebook page. I think it’s great that you can choose your toppings and add any extras (definitely recommend extra cheese on the nachos) during the ordering process and I love that they also have some fab veggie options on the menu. Once you’ve selected your order, you simply then select a collection time and pay. Easy peasy.

Order your Mexican feast Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 8pm via this website.

Smokey Oaks BBQ

If you like overindulgent American style BBQ food, Smokey Oaks will be your new go to takeaway in Bicester!

Smokey Oaks are open 5 days a week (Tuesday – Saturday, 5pm – 9pm) and you can place your order and confirm a collection time via WhatsApp. They are currently based in Charlotte Avenue, Elmsbrook in their jazzy new food truck and payment can be made by card on collection. The new menu is great and whether you’re a mega meat lover or a veggie/vegan, there’s an abundance of delicious options for you to choose from. From dirty burgers and hot dogs piled high with as many toppings as you’d like to meat platters and loaded fries, it’s hard to not want to order the whole menu.

Fine Dining

The White Hart of Wytham

The White Hart launched their At Home boxes in mid January and have been doing them ever since thanks to the high demand! They were created to bring restaurant quality food to the comfort and safety of their customer’s homes and have been designed to be as stress free, easy and quick to cook as possible. The food is excellent and they are ideal for if you’re celebrating a special occasion during lockdown or, are just in desperate need of a restaurant style meal.

Check out their most recent menu here and read my full review here.

215 Kitchen & Drinks

215 are based in Summertown, Oxford but deliver to Bicester. They have been doing their takeaways throughout each lockdown and in my opinion, take the crown for the fanciest takeaway I’ve come across. Their menu is small but very well thought out in terms of ingredients, taste and ease of execution at home and they also offer wine pairings, cocktails and a fab selection of sides to give you the full dining experience.

Check out their latest menu here and my full review here.

The Raw Pantry

The Raw Pantry is an independent business ran by chef, Sebastian who has over 15 year’s experience in the kitchen. Prior to lockdown, The Raw Pantry was a supper club affair however, due to the restrictions, Sebastian has now combined his passion for food and bringing loved ones together during this difficult time by doing live cookalongs over Zoom.

The 3 course menu changes monthly and has a meat/fish or veggie option. Sebastian delivers all the ingredients to your home and then from 8pm, you become second in command in the kitchen as he talks you through the cooking and plating process of your 3 courses. This is a great idea if you’re looking for something a little different to do whilst enjoying excellent food and company.

The Raw Pantry live cookalongs are £50pp for 3 courses, homemade truffles and coffee. Click here to see the most up to date menu and to find out how to book.

As I discover and try new takeaways in Bicester and the surrounding areas, I’ll be updating this guide regularly. If you have any takeaway recommendations that aren’t already featured in this guide or, if you’re an independent business based in Bicester or close by that would like to be featured, please get in touch via email or my Instagram page!
